More than 60 illegal migrants have drowned because of a fire on a ship that en route from Libya to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, Al-Arabiya reported.

It is clarified that the incident happened near the coast of Libya. According to the TV channel, the engine of a wooden ship caught fire, with about 100 people on board.

The flames quickly engulfed the ship. People jumped into the water to save themselves. The rescue operation lasted several days. Rescued about 40 people.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 1,200 illegal migrants have died while trying to cross the Mediterranean last year.

Earlier it was reported that an explosion thundered in the building of the higher naval school in the city of Janzur in the western suburb of Tripoli in Libya. Five people were killed.
