A doctor became a father by secretly impregnating a patient he was treating for infertility.

The woman found out about this using a DNA test.

In the USA, a doctor who treated infertility was accused of using his own sperm for fertilization of the patient.

Newsweek writes about this.

A former doctor in Washington state voluntarily surrendered his license after one of his previous infertility patients in California accused him of using her sperm for insemination.

The allegations against Christopher Herndon were revealed in a Washington Medical Board report along with a report that his license was “voluntarily suspended” in November. He is not eligible to continue or reactivate his Washington license.

A California woman identified in the report as Patient A claims DNA testing showed more ten years ago, Herndon “replaced donor sperm” and inseminated her with his sperm without her knowledge or consent.

The incident occurred in 2009. In 2010, she gave birth to her second child. However, later analysis showed that her children had different parental DNA. Further testing revealed that the second child did not share DNA with the woman's chosen donor, so she enrolled the child in genetic testing and ancestry tracing services.

Through an ancestry tracking service, she discovered a “connection” to a family that had the same last name as her doctor, Herndon. The documents allege that a private investigator hired by the woman discovered that the relative was Christopher's sibling.

In June, the patient submitted the test results and medical records, as well as the civil case, to the Washington Medical Board.

“This was a purposeful breach of trust placed in Herndon as a physician that impacted the patient and her family,” the medical board said in its ruling regarding the informal order.

It was also learned that Herndon was hired at the University of Washington Medical Center's reproductive medicine clinic in 2017 and resigned in September of this year, about two months before relinquishing his license.

It is not yet known whether Herndon may face criminal investigation. Meanwhile, Christopher's other patients who underwent intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization were offered free DNA testing.
