Scientists using AI (artificial intelligence) discovered something strange on the face of the saint Joseph in Raphael's famous painting “Madonna of the Rose”. Researchers believe that this face was not painted by the hand of a Renaissance artist.

Scientists have created a special analysis algorithm based on works authored by Raphael. Thanks to this, the AI was able to see details in the famous painting that were hidden from the human eye. In particular, AI is able to recognize the artist’s style, the characteristics of his strokes, color palette, shadows, as well as every single detail of the picture. Scientists used AI not just to analyze an entire masterpiece, but to study individual individuals in the painting.
Raphael's masterpiece depicts the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist giving the baby Jesus a parchment with an inscription, and St. Joseph (in the upper left corner). Scientists believe that all the characters in the picture, except for St. Joseph, were most likely painted by Raphael. Past studies of the masterpiece have already shown that the face of St. Joseph is painted worse than other faces in the painting. Scientists suggest that the face of St. Joseph could have been painted by Raphael's student Giulio Romano, although it’s still difficult to say for sure whether this is so.
The painting “Madonna of the Rose” is believed to have been painted in 1518–1520. In the mid-19th century, art historians began to suspect that Raphael may not have been the author of the entire work of art, and now these suspicions have almost certainly been confirmed, although scientists say that additional analysis of the masterpiece needs to be carried out, which AI will also help with.
