Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that 50 cases of the Chandipur virus have been reported across the state and 16 people have already died. There are also three known cases of infection with the deadly virus, for which there is no cure or vaccine, in other states.
Prevention efforts have been launched in the affected areas and more than 50,000 people have already been screened, Patel said. Local officials expect Chandipur virus cases to rise in the next few days.
What is Chandipura virus
This virus is a member of the Vesiculovirus genus of the Rhabdoviridae family. This family also includes the rabies virus. Chandipur virus was first discovered in 1965 in India.

Scientists consider female Phlebotomine mosquitoes to be the likely carrier of the virus.
