A court in Serbia will review the case of ex-SBU general Naumov

The appeal court returned the case of the former Ukrainian intelligence service official for retrial.

On Wednesday, February 14, the Court of Appeal in Serbia city ​​of Nis overturned the verdict of the court of first instance against former SBU general Andrei Naumov, who sentenced him to a year in prison for money laundering. The case was returned for retrial.

This was reported by the Balkan service of Radio Liberty with reference to the press service of the court.

The publication recalled that former high-ranking official of the Security Service of Ukraine Naumov was detained in early June 2022 in Serbia along with German citizen Aleksandar Akst, who was found with hundreds of thousands of euros.

Then the police announced that during an inspection of the car, money and diamonds were found that could be of criminal origin.

At the trial, Naumov denied the accusations of the investigation and claimed that it was his personal money.

On September 29, 2023, the court in Niš sentenced Naumov to one year in prison, and in December of the same year he was released from custody. While he is awaiting the final verdict.

The former SBU general cannot leave Serbia because his passports were taken away, and Serbia refused to extradite him to Ukraine. Naumov himself opposed extradition to Ukraine, arguing that in this case his safety would be at risk.

What is known about ex-general Naumov

General Andrey Naumov began working in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in 2019. Retired from service at the end of July 2021.

For some time he served as head of the Main Directorate of Internal Security, where he received new, greater powers and influence.

Before working at the SBU, Naumov worked at the State Agency for Management of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Exclusion Zone. Responsible for managing the economic complex of the exclusion zone, as well as communicating with the public regarding the radiation status.

Previously worked for 12 years in the prosecutor's office as a senior assistant to the deputy chief prosecutor, and then as a senior prosecutor.

Andrey Naumov was at the center of journalistic investigations related to corruption, smuggling of money and other valuables abroad.
