At the trial, 34-year-old Alexei Shompolov admitted guilt and stated that he went to war out of financial need.
A court in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan sentenced 34-year-old local resident Alexey Shompolov to six years and eight months in prison for participating in the war against Ukraine.
This was reported by Radio Liberty with reference to the press service of the court.
Shompolov fought on the side of Russia as part of the Wagner PMC. The man was found guilty of “mercenarism” and “committing a serious criminal offense against the peace and security of mankind.” The court also ordered the confiscation of funds in the amount of 205,590 rubles, stating that they were obtained by criminal means.
At the trial, Shompolov admitted guilt and stated that he went to war out of financial need. As follows from the court verdict, he got a job at the Wagner PMC based on an advertisement on a social network. He was promised a monthly payment of 240 thousand rubles. In his appeal, Shompolov noted that when concluding the agreement, he was misled, saying that he did not violate the law, since in Ukraine “it is not a war, but a special operation to liberate the civilian population.”
Despite the fact that the Kazakh authorities have not directly condemned Russia's war against Ukraine, the participation of the country's citizens in foreign wars is illegal. Under the article on “mercenarism,” a sentence of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property can be imposed, and in onerous circumstances – up to life imprisonment with deprivation of citizenship.
Let us remind you that in Russia another PMC is recruiting mercenaries for the war in Ukraine .
