In the Netherlands, a 12-year-old boy was killed by a fireworks explosion. Doctors continue to fight for the life of his younger brother.
The incident took place on December 31 in the city of Haaksbergen. The boys were walking around the city: at the moment of the explosion there was a unknown man near them, who was holding a burning fireworks in his hands.
The police confirmed that the explosion was not caused by the children. The injured boys were urgently hospitalized, but within an hour one of them died in intensive care.
On the same day, law enforcement officers detained a suspect in the murder of a child and inflicting serious injuries. Investigations are ongoing.
Fireworks in the Netherlands
In 2020, the Dutch government officially banned the use of fireworks due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to official statistics, annually more than 1.3 thousand Dutchmen sought help with injuries from fireworks. After a nationwide ban, this figure dropped by 70%.
