< p>Before his arrest, the Ukrainian lived in the territory of the temporarily occupied Donetsk region.

71-year-old Ukrainian citizen Viktor Demchenko died in Russia, accused of “espionage” and “participation in a terrorist organization.” This probably happened in a pre-trial detention center in the Rostov region.

This was reported by the Russian human rights organization “Memorial” with reference to information about the termination of the case due to the death of the accused, which appeared in the file on the court's website.

“Very little is known about the person involved in the case and the accusation itself – Demchenko was born in 1952 in the city of Mospino, where he lived. Since 2014, this city has been controlled by the so-called DPR. Does he have close relatives and which territory is unknown,” the message says.

In a human rights organization, whose activities were recently banned in the Russian Federation, a Ukrainian was accused under articles of “espionage” (276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) , “participation in a terrorist organization” (Part 2 of Article 205.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and “illegal possession of weapons or ammunition” (Part 1 of Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The case against him was received by the Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don at the end August 2023. A total of seven meetings were held.

Defendants in this category of cases are in Rostov pre-trial detention centers.

Recall that last year in Russia a Ukrainian citizen was accused of espionage and sentenced to 16 years in a maximum security colony. The Ukrainian was accused of allegedly collecting secret information in Tula.
