6G limits disclosed

With the advent of 6G, the era of the terabit economy will begin. This was reported in a report by the research agency Counterpoint Research.

In the disclosed document, the agency's specialists listed the main features of the sixth generation communication. The most important difference for 6G will be the transition from gigahertz to terahertz – similar to how the transition from megahertz to gigahertz was carried out with the advent of 5G. The 6G spectrum is reported to range from 300 gigahertz to 3 terahertz. It will provide terabit bandwidth, microseconds of latency and “never before seen” information transfer capabilities.

CR predicts that with the advent of the 5G era, there will be new ways for people to interact, such as through 3D holograms. These communication methods require the maximum channel bandwidth. Experts also predicted the emergence of digital twins that will interact with the physical world through augmented reality and artificial intelligence.

The company believes that 6G will require a complex infrastructure deployment. In particular, devices operating in the terahertz range for communication require line-of-sight channels and higher energy efficiency. According to Counterpoint Research, the leaders of the communications market will remain Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, ZTE, InterDigital and other companies. The equipment will be produced by Samsung, Qualcomm, LG and Apple.

“6G will give an impetus to the development of the terabit economy. Researchers and industry will have to work hard to innovate, ”the report says. According to experts, the start of the sixth generation communication tests will take place in 2028.

In the summer of 2020, it became known that the South Korean authorities intend to launch a pilot project for sixth generation communications in 2026. After testing 6G, Korean specialists will announce the start of a project to modernize the state's current network infrastructure.
