55 years of service and an inglorious end: the history and technical characteristics of the ship Orsk

As you know, today, March 24, on the day when exactly a month passed of a full-scale invasion of Russian aggressors into the territory of Ukraine, our valiant defenders eliminated the large landing ship (LHD) Orsk of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. This happened in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian port of Berdyansk.

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine officially confirmed the destruction of the large landing ship Orsk. Deputy Minister of Defense Anna Malyarreported this on the air of the telethon.

— The ship destroyed in Berdyansk could carry up to 20 tanks, 45 armored personnel carriers and 400 paratroopers. This is a huge target that was hit by our military, the deputy minister said.

Background

The ship was laid down at the Kaliningrad Shipyard 55 years ago – in August 1967. The ship was launched in February 1968 under the name “BDK-69”, which in October 2002 was changed to “Orsk”.

Over the past years, assigned to the Soviet Navy, the BDK Orsk performed 11 combat duties, took part in a number of large-scale military exercises.

On the service record BDK Orsk: transportation of peacekeepers to Yugoslavia, delivery of humanitarian cargo to Guinea, Syria, Bulgaria, as well as the evacuation of refugees from the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict.

A separate episode in the history of the ship is the delivery of weapons and equipmentfor a contingent of Russian troops in the Transcaucasus in August 2000.

It was repaired four times – in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2017.

Remained in service until until March 24, 2022, when more than the half-century history of the ship ingloriously ended off the coast of the Ukrainian port of Berdyansk, captured by Russian invaders.

Armament:
one twin 57 mm ZIF-31B artillery mount. Up to 1,500 tons of equipment and cargo can be placed on board.
