On the southern border of the United States, authorities have lost sight of the parents of 545 detained underage illegal migrants. It is reported by NBC News.
Many of them – about two-thirds of their adult families – were deported back to Central America before they could be found, human rights activists told reporters. This is a relatively new situation: in 2018, most families managed to reunite before deportation.
It is noted that many parents who are abroad did not want to take their children and spoke in favor of keeping them in the United States – with relatives or sponsors. According to them, they fear for the fate of their offspring if they return to their home countries.
In June, as the coronavirus outbreak erupted, Federal District Court Judge for the Central District of California, Dolly Gee, ordered the release of migrant children held in migration prisons. She, however, provided for a number of additional conditions, in accordance with which hundreds of underage illegal immigrants remained behind bars.
