400 tombs discovered in Turkey, about two thousand years old
In Turkey, in the ancient city of Bloundus, archaeologists have discovered 400 rock-cut tombs, painted with flowers, vines and bunches of grapes. The burials are approximately 1,800 years old, according to the Daily Sabah .
According to the head of the excavation, Professor Birol Jan, stone tombs were actively used after the 2nd century AD.
“We can say that they were intended for family burials,” he said.
The scientist stated that there are different types of rooms inside the rock tombs. In front of the walls of each crypt, sarcophagi are carved into the rock.
“In addition, we found places inside the tombs that we believe were used for funeral ceremonies. The entrance to them was closed with a marble door, which was opened during burials or rituals, ”said Jan.
Experts said that it is important to preserve the tombs and do everything possible so that tourists can visit the necropolis in the future. Projects are already being prepared to promote this archaeological site.
Earlier it was reported that archaeologists, conducting a routine inspection in the necropolis of Al-Hamidiya, discovered hundreds of previously unknown tombs. They were carved into the wall. The tombs are of different architectural styles and are dug at several levels.
