Google announced that one of its platforms, YouTube, has been attacked by hackers from a “Russian-language forum” since 2019. Under the guise of cooperation, they lured bloggers to gain access to the account and either sold it or used it for cryptocurrency fraud. The IT giant noted that cybercriminals received from $ 3000 to $ 4000 for one account.
Hackers wrote to bloggers with an offer of cooperation, posing as employees of a company or product. If the person agreed, they sent him a link with the software through which the cookies were stolen.
Google managed to find and block about 15,000 accounts from which this malicious activity was conducted, 1.6 million messages and more than 2,400 malicious files. Since May 2021, the company has been able to reduce the number of phishing emails on Gmail by 99.6%. YouTube found and automatically recovered over 99% of the captured channels.
The IT giant referred the case to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for investigation.
Earlier, “Russian hackers” were accused of stealing US classified data on sanctions against Russia. The hacker group Nobelium, which is associated with the Russian Federation, stole classified data on the US sanctions policy. They also managed to obtain information about investigations by the American counterintelligence.
