24 coronavirus patients have died in a hospital in western India due to an oxygen leak. When a tanker was filling an oxygen tank in the city of Nashik, the valve did not work and the gas escaped.

Last year, the hospital was converted into a covid hospital due to the large number of infected patients. At the time of the emergency, there were 157 patients in the hospital, almost all on oxygen support. The condition of 61 patients was assessed as critical. This was reported on Thursday by The Indian Express.

According to the publication, the patients did not have oxygen for 30 minutes. 22 people died on Wednesday afternoon, two more – on the night of April 22.

The country's authorities expressed regrets to the families and friends of the victims and called the incident a heartbreaking tragedy.

Note that doctors in the state of Maharashtra are facing a great lack of oxygen for patients.

In India, 314,835 infected with coronavirus were detected per day – this is the highest rate in the world for the entire pandemic, as of April 22, 2021.

Some hospitals in the west of the country said they had “several hours of oxygen left for their patients.” Doctors recommend that many patients stay at home due to a lack of beds.

According to the latest data from the country's Ministry of Health, since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 15.93 million people in India have contracted COVID-19, of which 184,657 have died.
