20 “shooting stars” per hour: Orionid stream will peak on Friday night
The Orionids Starfall will reach maximum activity on Friday night, October 21-22. This was reported by the press service of the Moscow Planetarium, TASS reports.
“This is a periodic meteor shower of moderate strength, with peak activity of about 20 meteors per hour. Orionids' activity often remains almost at the same level for several subsequent nights after the peak, ”the planetarium noted.
Every year, the Orionids meteor shower, which was left behind by the famous Halley's comet, is observed from October 2 to November 7 with maximum activity on October 21-22. From midnight to dawn, “shooting stars” can be seen above the southeastern horizon.
This year, there is a possibility that the Orionids may not be seen due to the full moon.
Earlier in October, the Moon passed the new moon phase, and its light did not interfere with the observation of the Draconids' starfall. At the peak of this meteor shower, up to 15 stars per hour sweep by.
