Arminia Bielefeld scored an important victory in the fight to stay in the league, defeating Freiburg 1-0 at the start of the 28th Bundesliga round.
This pushed Arminia from 17th to 14th place in the tight Bundesliga relegation battle, but is only one point and five goals ahead of the relegation rank held by Mainz.
The relegation competitors are still in action. The Berlin Hertha receives Borussia Mönchengladbach, Cologne and Mainz duel on Sunday in the relegation summit.
At the Bielefelder Alm, Andreas Voglsammer had the hosts' lead (with Manuel Prietl, Christian Gebauer from the 91st minute) on his head in the eleventh minute, but put the ball clearly past the goal. Freiburg (with Philipp Lienhart) left the greatest chance in the game in the 17th minute. Roland Sallai pushed the ball past the left corner.
In the second round, the Bielefeld team finally took control of the game. Fabian Klos put his header over the crossbar in the 52nd minute, Voglsammer missing half a meter (66th).
But in the 68th minute the ball was in goal. After a corner that was played for a short time, Salzburg loanee Masaya Okugawa played the ball sharply into the middle, where Freiburg defender Baptiste Santamaria cleared into his own goal – 1-0. The alleged second Arminen hit by Joakim Nilsson did not count in the 74th minute after an offside position, Voglsammer missed the decision in the 86th minute, missing the corner by just inches.
Freiburg tried to throw everything back in the finish, but there was no chance of an equalizer.
